string(4288) "THE PLOUGH or PLOW - is a tool or machine used in farming for initial cultivation of soil in preparation for sowing seed or planting to loosen or turn the soil. Ploughs where traditionally drawn by working animals such as horses or cattle, but in modern times may be drawn by tractors. A plough may be made of wood, iron, or steel. It has been a basic instrument for most of recorded history, and represents one of the major advances in agriculture.
The primary purpose of ploughing is to turn over the upper layer of the soil, bringing fresh nutrients to the surface, while burying weeds, the remains of previous crops, and both crop and weed seeds, allowing them to break down. It also provides a seed-free medium for planting an alternate crop. In modern use, a ploughed field is typically left to dry out, and is then harrowed before planting. Plowing and cultivating a soil homogenizes and modifies the upper 12 to 25 cm of the soil to form a plow layer. In many soils, the majority of fine plant feeder roots can be found in the topsoil or plow layer.
STEAM PLOUGHING was during the late 19th century, a two engine method of steam cultivating.
The steam threshing process is represented by a threshing machine that would be driven by a traction engine

string(3654) "DUALLA VILLAGE - Dualla is a charming village in Co. Tipperary, nestled in between the local Kill Hills, Slieve na Mbhan (the mountain of women), and the distant Galtees. A lovely, modern church, a beautiful Grotto erected by local people, a Community Centre, tennis court, all add to the picturesque village on the road between historic Cashel and Killenaule.
Dualla (Irish: Dubhaille) is a village near Cashel in Ireland in CountyTipperary on the R691. A number of small housing estates have been built in the area in recent years adding to the few scattered houses along the road and parish church that constituted the village. At the foot of the Kill Hills, which was once thickly populated, can be seen the remains of KillballyherbryChurch, built in the 13th century. This church was in use for the locals before Dualla was built. There is a graveyard nearby, where many of our ancestors are buried. There are various interpretations of the origin of Dualla, but a widely accepted one in Duche Ui Cheallaigh - the land of Kelly. A few miles down the road as you approach the main Dublin road can be seen the ruins of a Cistercian Monastery in Ballykelly.
The chief attractions of Dualla are it's unspoiled beauty, and the warm, welcoming and friendly people, who are always ready to greet friend and stranger with a Céad Míle Fáilte.

"The curfew tolls, the knell of parting day.
The lowing herd wind slowly ore the lea,
The ploughman homeward plods his weary way,

These lines from Thomas Gray remind us of a time when fields were ploughed with horses, heavy work for both man and horse.
The Dualla Ploughing Association was set up in 1934 the first committee was as follows: Ned Moloughney (Fussough) - Tom Cunningham (Raheen) - Jim Croke (Grallagh) - Denis O Sullivan (Ballinure) - Eugene Sheehy (Erry) - Willie Gleeson (Garrane) - Jim Ryan (Rathclough) Jerome Connelly (Rathmore) - Michael Heffernan (Boun) - Thomas Son Bulfin (Kilcarney) - Thomas Shanahan (Kilcarney)
