string(1739) "OUR FUEL ADVISORY SERVICE -Your fuel might be contaminated or have diesel bug present. Take advantage of OUR low cost advisory service.
We offer impartial advice and guidance on the cleanliness and condition of your fuel including any recommended action - delivered in a simple, easy to understand format.
With the recent changes in the modern fuel specifications, contaminated fuels, whether in storage or in the distribution chain, are now widespread. Solid particles, diesel bug and water are real issues that can leave fuel unfit for use, clog filters and cause engine failures.
From a sample of fuel posted to us we will quickly determine the level and make up of contamination present, both solid particulate (including the presence of diesel bug) and give a water content ppm value determined via a Karl Fischer test. Each sample is low cost and a 2-3 day report turnaround is normal. On the test report sheet we will also advise what, if any, remedial action should be considered in order to return the fuel to a useable state.
Our fuel advisory service reports on the following:
- Cleanliness expressed as an ISO code
- Water content ppm, derived from a Karl Fischer technique test
- Simple traffic light system for easily interpreting the results
- Your fuels condition relative to the accepted requirements by the WWFC
- Alert to the presence of diesel bug
- Recommended action to remediate the fuel (if required)
- A microscope photograph of the contaminants present in the fuel caught on a 0.8 micron slide

string(4254) "Keeping It Clean
"Raising the standard of of fuel quality throughout Ireland"
As increasing amounts of biofuel are added to the fossil fuel supply, it is becoming more imperative that the customer receives clean fuel to drive advanced engine technology. The FPS has introduced its Fuel Certification Scheme with this one aim in mind. This feature sets out why biofuels have been introduced, the implications for fuel storage and the need for significant testing to ensure the supply of clean, quality fuel.
It's a fact more biofuels must be used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport which currently run at a fifth of the country's total output.
But adding a growing proportion of fuels distilled from corn and biodiesel made from rapeseed, used cooking oil and tallow is not without its problems. It is well known that the EN 14214 standard was revised as high concentrations of palm oil were being used during 2008/09. That meant blocked filters on petrol forecourts across Ireland.
In 2013 it was reported a Government think-tank's findings that contaminated fuels would cost the motorists around €250m this year in vehicle defects. That's a problem worth fixing and shows why guaranteeing fuel quality is quickly becoming the major priority for the supply industry.
There are several common problems to over come to provide the clean fuel customers require:
FUEL STABILITY: Biodiesel has a maximum storage life of 6 months, although some bodies suggest it should be stored for no longer than 3 months.
EXTERNAL CONDITIONS: Water heat and sunlight can affect fuel quality. Tanks must be clean, dry and water free before they are used.
ADDITIVES AND MIXING BLENDS: It's not always clear exactly what is in the fuel being stored. While most additives carry out their intended job, mixing them together can result in reactions which can block pump filters or even cause engines to break down.
BAD DELIVERIES: We've all heard the horror stories but these might not always be the fault of the delivery company. The issues may have started two or three steps down the delivery chain.
So what can the industry do? We all know fuel contamination is commonplace... we need to identify it, stop it from spreading and remove it.
FPS FUEL ACCREDITATION SCHEME, administered by Oil Tank Cleaning Specialists Ltd, certifies tank installations by way of constant monitoring.
We leave no stone unturned during the installation and testing process. Fuel are obtained on a pre-determined frequency and reports generated. It usually takes around 12 months to achieve the appropriate certification. That time allows thorough monitoring of the complete installation, guaranteeing that fuel being dispensed from a tank meets the standards.
As well as looking in minute detail at the installation, a series of ongoing tests look at the following potential contamination's.
Bacterial contamination: The presence of adenosine triphosphate or ATP, detects microbial activity in the fuel. It's an on site test which accurately identifies any living orgasms in the fuel. It detects as little as 1 living cell per millimetre to 85% accuracy, allowing Oil Tank Cleaning Specialists to track and predict potential risk and certify fuel as safe.
Water contamination: Tests measure free and suspended water. There is more water suspended in bio-diesel than in traditional road diesel, so higher proportions of bio content will affect outcomes. We have a simple traffic light system for presenting results. It is important to reduce the water content in fuel to minimize the potential habitat for bacterial contamination.
Particulate contamination: Particulates in fuel are potentially more damaging to plant and machinery than bacteria. Requirements on particulates set out under the ISO 4406 standard define the levels of contamination in a 1 millilitre fluid sample, give overall contamination an ISO rating and sale the number of particles greater than or equal to 4, 6 and 16 microns in size.

string(1826) "Fuel Sampling
Frequent sampling is crucial for maintaining fuel condition. This procedure measures fuel degradation, water content, particulate levels {Cleanliness} as well as identifying the presence of diesel bugs.
Fuel oil companies recommend a time limit of six months for storing biodiesel. Active treatment procedures should be implemented in cases where the fuel storage is for a critical backup resource such as an emergency power generation system.
Oil Tank Cleaning Specialists offers a comprehensive service covering measurement and qualification. Testing can be carried out either at the clients premises or samples can be sent by post or courier.
We test for:
- Bacterial contamination
- Water contamination
- Particulate contamination
Test should be carried out immediately after the samples are taken since bacteria within the sample begin to die as soon as it's exposed to daylight={UV}. Samples will also be sensitive to change in ambient temperatures.
Fuel Care ATP/ Bacterial Test System
The ATP test is a process of rapidly measuring actively growing microorganisms through detection of adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. This method has been used for detecting microbial activity in a variety of fluids for many years in the medical and food production professions. Basically this procedure provides a cell count - and does so for all types of living organisms in a single test which can be carried out on the client's premises.
An ideal solution for measuring microbial contamination, the ATP test will detect as little as one living cell per millilitre to an 85 percent accuracy, thereby allowing us to track and predict, potential risk and certify that the fuel as safe.

string(754) "Fuel Care {Water moisture test - PPM {Parts per Million}
This test measures both free water and suspended water. Typically, water in suspen-sion of biofuels has increased from around 200ppm {conventional road diesel}, to 500ppm for biodiesel. This will be higher as per the percentage of FAME increases. Clearly the bio content percentage will affect the outcome. As the levels increase, the results can also be presented by the traffic light format.
CHARTS FOR MEASUREMENT CAN BE SEEN AT OIL TANK CLEANING SPECIALISTS LTD
Since water is vital to support life in the bacteria {use oxygen from the water}, even if you don't have bacterial contamination it's best to remove the potential habitat.

Potentially particulates within fuel can be more harmful to plant and machinery than bacterial contamination. Some engine manufacturers have called for this to be reduced for some fuel systems. This requirement has been specified under the ISO 4406 standard.
What does this mean?
- Defines the level of contamination present in a fluid sample (1 ml)
- Gives the overall contamination level an ISO rating
- Three scale numbers are used, all particles greater than or equal to 4,6 & 14 micron in size

Doran Oil
Doran Oil is the first company in Ireland to be awarded the fuel cleanliness certificate under the Oil Tank Cleaning Specialists scheme. Their supplies and tanks will be checked rigorously checked every quarter by Oil Tank Cleaning Specialist Ltd. "The market is extremely tough say's Seamus Doran from Doran Oil if there is a problem the first thing the buyers do is blame the fuel especially those who neglect to clean their tanks. A lot of bio fuels hold moisture inside and they rarely clean their tanks to get rid of it so it's good to say that our fuel is quality accredit and certified. We felt like we needed to show that not only are we a family business, we have morals and business ethics and wanted to show we have quality products as well"
Doran Oil has depots in Thurles and Cashel with a fleet of four tankers serving all of Tipperary and Kilkenny.
